#1 Defining News
The news is a reliable and efficient way to receive information about current events, as well as hot topics going on at the time. News can come in all different sorts of ways. The first news paper or "News Letter" as they called it was first published in 1704. News is often referred to as "hard news" to differentiate itself from soft news. News can present itself in many different forms, and platforms.
1.) Not often used anymore but we have newspapers as to which most older generations still use. In a traditional newspaper your contents will contain some breaking news story's, local news, national news, most likely some political news, and then some form of ads and entertainment. Over the last 30 years we have seen a sudden decline in the amount of newspapers and demand for paper copies of news. Below is a study done by Pew Research Center done on the decline of printed newspapers.
2.) Living in the modern world we live in we can have a news story at our fingertips in a matter of seconds. Through news sources like Apple News, and CNN it allows for us to receive our news in a quick and efficient way. News through the digital way has become the world's most widely used form of receiving their news and information.
3.) Another form of news used quite often for myself personally is the radio. In my car, I find myself in the mornings while driving to work listening to the radio rather than hooking up my phone. Now typically it is not the "traditional" news, but is more modern and more pop culture. For examples the radio broadcasters may be discussing a new trend that has taken over Tik Tok, or what celebrity is getting a divorce this week. With this I typically listen to this and then find myself looking it up later from several different sources to ensure I had heard the correct thing.
FAKE NEWS
Fake news is a constant problem that causes up roars against real news and false news. With this we must know ways to combat the fake news to ensure we are receiving and believing the correct information. Below are some ways to differentiate fake news from factual news.
- The first step to defining fake news is to look at the source. Is the source a credible source and is it a legit website. Some news fishing sites can disguise themselves as mainstream news websites. Always look at the web address .com, .org, .net, .web are typically going to be your credible websites.
- Look for errors. Spelling errors, format errors, and factual errors. Most fake news websites push out news so fast they typically forget to check. Big news companies are going to check to a tea to make sure everything looks scholarly where as fake news websites won't.
- Check multiple sources. Just like a research paper when you are doing research on news use multiple sources to check information before believing what is on one website.
- Look for bias opinions. Fake news websites who are not run by media professionals are going to be biased to try and sway the opinions of others. Big sites like CNN, KSLA, and local news stations are going to remain biased in all situations and only give the neutral unbiased facts.
